Located in Morris County, is the picturesque town of Mt. Arlington, New Jersey. Mt. Arlington is located on the southeast shore of Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey’s largest freshwater body and a major recreational resource. Today Mt. Arlington is a growing suburban residential community, but it was once a thriving resort town. In 1882, the development of a passenger rail service turned Mt. Arlington and Lake Hopatcong into a popular summer resort area. Every summer thousands of people from New York City and surrounding areas would arrive by trains at Landing Station in Mt. Arlington to escape the city heat and enjoy the famous “Mt. Arlington Breeze,” which always cooled the summer evenings.
People who arrived at Landing Station would take a water taxi across Lake Hopatcong to stay at the many large resort hotels in the area. Among the hotels built to support the booming tourism was the luxurious Breslin Hotel in Mt. Arlington, which included 250 rooms and electricity. During peak summer season, Lake Hopatcong became so popular that hotel rooms in Mt. Arlington were hard to come by causing some visitors to resort to camping near the lake.
As tourism continued to grow in the Lake Hopatcong and Mt. Arlington area, the development of various amusements started to pop up. Mt. Arlington was home to a major amusement park, Betrand Island, which featured a world famous carousel and roller coaster. The park was open for late spring, summer, and early fall seasons for everyone to enjoy. Betrand Island Amusement Park also hosted beauty pageants, including an unofficial Miss America in 1934. The Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club, still a landmark to this day, was also developed on the island too.
The resort town flourished in the 1920s, as many famous people owned property on Lake Hopatcong, which attracted many famous visitors including Babe Ruth, Bud Abbot, Bert Lahr, and Milton Berle. However, tourism and other business endeavors hit hard in the 1930s and 1940s due to the Great Depression. As a result permanent residences were constructed in the area in the 1940s and ‘50s, and most of the modern residential development was completed in the 1960s and ‘70s.
Mt. Arlington is now a residential lake community, and is known as the “Gateway of Lake Hopatcong.” Individual lakefront residents in Mt. Arlington, and residents in surrounding areas, now privately own most of the shoreline of Lake Hopatcong, as well as homeowner or community associations and private businesses. Mt. Arlington residents can access popular bars and restaurants by boat across Lake Hopatcong, and visit several recreational parks on the lake, including the Hopatcong State Park.
