For people visiting New Jersey for the first time, beautiful parks typically are not the first thing they think of. Residents of the Garden State, however, are well aware of just how rich and vibrant the nature of their home state can truly be. Nestled in the heart of Morris County in Northern New Jersey lays the borough of Mount Arlington. A quaint town, Mount Arlington boasts peaceful parks for families and people of all ages. With everything from hiking trails and lakes to playgrounds and bike paths, Mount Arlington parks offer it all. Here are four parks to visit while you’re in Mt. Arlington.
1. Mt. Arlington Memorial Park
A smaller park located on Glen Ave, Memorial Park is perfect for a stroll on a nice day. Just a short walk from Lake Hopatcong, this park boasts a playground for children, an easy walking path for seniors, and a gazebo with a view of the pond. The flags fly high with the fountain in the background, commemorating and memorializing those who have served in our military, which only adds to the character of this small park. Cross the wooden bridges over the pond, take a walk with your furry companion in this pet friendly park, and enjoy the beautiful views of the water that Mount Arlington has to offer.
2. Fireman’s Field Playground
On the corner of Altenbrand Ave and Mountainview Ave sits the best playground in Mount Arlington. Sitting in the shadow of one of Mount Arlington’s water towers, this playground comes equipped with slides, swings, monkey bars, and other pieces of adventure to keep the kids occupied and active for hours. This playground is suitable for older children and younger children alike, offering two rock climbing walls for the more adventurous little ones. Offering plenty of free parking, the playground is just a short stairway from the parking lot, making transportation easy and accessible for those with multiple children. It’s perfect for a day out of the house.
3. Berkshire Valley Wildlife Management Area
Just a short drive from Woodmont West, the Berkshire Valley WMA spans across multiple towns throughout Morris County, adding up to 2,030 acres of land. While the park offers one official marked trail, running 2.5 miles long, the more adventurous hiker can explore the facility’s numerous unmarked trails to traverse on foot or to conquer on a mountain bike. Aside from hiking trails and biking trails, Berkshire Valley WMA offers some of the best fishing spots in Mount Arlington. For those interested in wildlife and birdwatching, the Wildlife Management Area was initially implemented to help preserve the population of several birds native to New Jersey, including different types of warblers. It also offers frequent run ins with deer and is open, in certain areas, for deer hunting during the permitted seasons. Deer hunting in Mount Arlington is not permitted in many places, making Berkshire Valley WMA a key landmark for the New Jersey huntsman.
4. Hopatcong State Park
While not in Mount Arlington, this state park is less than a 10 minute drive from Mount Arlington. Bordering Lake Hopatcong, the largest lake in the Garden State, this park offers a day of family fun. Enjoy a dip in the lake on the beach, grill some hot dogs at the barbecue pits, then finish up with some ice cream from the nearby concession stand. Enjoy a day of fishing near Mount Arlington by catching local trout, pike, bass, and other stocked species. The park also offers activities such as volleyball, basketball, and soccer with equipment available to rent for a small fee. For aquatic adventures, Lake Hopatcong is open to water vessels such as jet skis, pontoon boats, fishing boats, and speed boats so long as they meet regulation standards. All of these options and more make Hopatcong State Park one of the best parks near Mt. Arlington.
