Does your apartment to-do list feel like it never ends? Repeating the same chores time after time is necessary but can become extremely tiring. We know how you feel and have come up with some apartment cleaning hacks to keep your routine to a minimum.

Countertops

Try as you might to keep everything in the bowl, spills happen. For sticky countertops, mix a solution of vegetable oil and baking soda together. Using an old toothbrush to scrub, wipe away all the gunk that has accumulated in the most used areas. Because oil mixes with oil, this trick works for almost all substances including those tough oil and grease stains.

The Microwave

Microwaves can get pretty messy, but lucky for you we have an easy way to make it shine again. In a microwave-safe bowl, mix an equal amount of water and vinegar for 5 to 10 minutes on high. Place a toothpick or other small wooden object on top of the mixture to prevent over boiling. When the timer is done, allow the surface to cool then wipe down the inside with a sponge or paper towel. For a refreshing scent, mix lemon juice as you see fit!

For Dishes

If your apartment lacks a dishwasher, you can already imagine the hassle of hand washing everything. Save water and speed up the process by filling a spray bottle with one part dish soap and three parts water. But wait, this mixture can be used on much more than just dishes! Use this spray to wipe down your refrigerator, countertops and any appliance that, of course, cannot go directly under water.

Stovetop

For burnt on grease stains in and around your stove, boil an even mixture of white vinegar and water. After removing from the heat, add 2 tablespoons of baking soda until it fizzles. When the pan has cooled, a scrub brush or sponge can be used to apply the liquids to tough surfaces and be wiped clean. Go over the newly cleaned areas with a damp paper towel to avoid the lingering smell of vinegar.

Around the Bathroom

Thoroughly cleaning the bathroom usually requires breaking out the bleach and other pungent cleaners. Skip the odors and try a more aromatic approach. Slice a grapefruit in half, sprinkle both halves with salt, sprinkle salt on the surface of the tub, toilet, or sink and scrub away with the open halves of the grapefruit. This will help keep potentially harmful chemicals out of your tub, while also leaving your porcelain sparkling like new.

Showerheads

When dealing with shower heads, mineral deposits are going to happen. These unappealing build ups prevent water from passing through and allow bacteria a place to grow. To get your shower head looking like new, pour distilled white vinegar into a plastic bag and fit the bag around your shower head. Secure the bag with a rubber band so that the shower head is submerged in the vinegar. Let the showerhead soak for about an hour before removing the bag. Be sure to wipe the shower head with a damp cloth before showering.

Common Stain Removal

Regardless of how much you attempt to be clean, stains are inevitable. For juices, mix 1 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with 1 cup of warm water and blot the surface. Gum can be removed from carpets and fabrics with a dab with extra-strength Bengay, heat from a hairdryer, and scraped out with a textured surface. Blot the area with a detergent solution and rinse to remove the Bengay. For an all-purpose white fabric cleaner, invest in a tub of Oxiclean. Apply a scoop of Oxiclean to the afflicted area, scrub and let dry. Rinse and repeat if needed.
